I thought I’d dedicate this week’s post to one of my not-so-guilty pleasures when it comes to music, Cody Simpson. For those of you who don’t know, Cody Simpson is an 18-year-old musician from Australia. Formerly signed to Warner Music/Atlantic Records, he is known for his hit pop singles, “Surfboard,” “iYiYi,” “All Day,” and many more. In August of last year, Cody announced his departure from Atlantic, citing creative differences with the label. As of right now, he is currently unsigned, but he is, in fact, working on a new album with an entirely different vibe, set to be released this summer.

Straying away from the pop scene, Cody has adopted a very laid-back, acoustic new sound. He has previously said that one of his biggest influences is fellow musician, Jack Johnson, and you can truly hear it in his latest releases. Last month, he released the first song off of his upcoming album, Free, titled “Flower.” Last week, he released his second song, called “New Problems,” which he wrote about splitting up and getting back together with his current girlfriend, 19-year-old model Gigi Hadid.

“Flower” and “New Problems” both encompass the grown up, mature feel Cody wanted to go for. These two songs sound like a fusion between John Mayer and Jack Johnson, and I’m definitely not complaining. I hope that after hearing his new material, people will begin to take him more seriously as an artist. He is incredibly talented, but not many people have given him a chance.

Can’t wait to hear the rest of his new music!
